GOTHIC IVORIES: CONTENT AND CONTEXT, 5-6 JULY 2014

Saturday 5 July 2014, The Courtauld Institute of Art, London
Sunday 6 July 2014, The British Museum, London

Jointly organised by The British Museum and The Courtauld Gothic Ivories Project, this event followed on from the successful 2012 conference Gothic Ivories: Old Questions New Directions (V&A-Courtauld). Celebrating new research on Gothic ivory carving, papers focused on a wide range of topics arising from the study of Gothic ivory carving and Embriachi pieces, related to the themes of content and context.
Themed sessions were dedicated to questions of iconography, sources and original use and context, research into provenance, relationships with other media, ivory carving in the 16th century, history of collecting in the 19th and 20th century.

THE GOTHIC IVORIES PROJECT AND 'FICTILE IVORIES'

The practice of making plaster casts of carved ivories from different periods was particularly popular in the 19th century, as is evidenced by John Westwood's Descriptive Catalogue of the Fictile Ivories in the South Kensington Museum, published in 1876.
As the Conway Library at the Courtauld Institute of Art has a small collection of such casts, we were able to add photographs of these to our corpus.
In certain cases, as for instance the cast reproduced on this page, this faithful imprint is the only trace left of a piece whose whereabouts are unknown today.
To find the photographs of these casts on the site, type the word 'cast' in the View field (drop-down menu in the Advanced Search page), or click HERE.

NEW ACQUISITIONS BY THE LOUVRE NOW ON THE GOTHIC IVORIES WEBSITE

Two outstanding statuettes of Synagoga and saint John the Evangelist believed to belong to a Deposition group already in the Louvre were recently acquired by the museum, thanks to the generosity of numerous contributors.
We have now added them to our online corpus! See them HERE.
