Gothic Ivory Sculpture: Old Questions, New Directions, 23-24 March 2012
Location: Victoria and Albert Museum and The Courtauld Institute of Art, London
This international conference, the first one devoted solely to the topic of Gothic ivory carvings, brought together both established authorities and younger scholars.
It explored a wide variety of fascinating questions relating to these artworks through papers ranging from focused studies of objects from a physical or iconographic standpoint, to wider contextual approaches that explored the ways in which Gothic ivories were made, bought, sold and used. Numerous papers addressed the thorny issues of authenticity, restoration and forgery.
This conference celebrated the recent wave of new research in the field and reassessed the importance of these minute carvings for the study of medieval art.
