I was just browsing Koechlin when I found your fabulous page and forum. I am writing on alabaster and trying to elaborate on the reasons of its growing popularity in the 1st half of the 14th century, which is usually credited to the fashion for ivory. I mean, that many authors considered alabaster a cheaper alternative for ivory. I was wondering what Specialists on ivory think about it and if you know any sources which could prove that carvers in ivory worked also in alabaster. Koechlin mentions the source concerning Jean de Marville's purchase of ivory in 1377, but this document does not provide certainty that it was intended for hi owns work. I would appreciate any comments!

Dear Aleksandra,
Sorry for such a late reply. I have not come across any reference to craftsmen working on both materials or stylistic comparisons. The only stylistic references to alabaster in ivory works that I know of occur in modern ivories, like in a piece in the Museo Lazaro Galdiano in Madrid where a later craftsman (presumably 19th century) has been inspired by medieval English alabasters when creating a piece. See http://www.flg.es/ficha.asp?ID=2586. Sorry I cannot be of more help but maybe someone else will have other thoughts about this. Catherine

Dear Catherine,
Thank you so much for your answer. Also a negative one is an important message for me.
Your website is also an inspiration for me as I am thinking about opening a comparable portal concerning renaissance alabasters.
Best regards!
Aleksandra

Actually, there are a number of fifteenth-century ivories, mainly Netherlandish, that bear striking parallels to alabaster carvings. The V&A's inv. no. A.568-1910 is a good example of an ivory carving with connections to alabasters. Occasionally, small alabaster carvings can be mistaken for ivory, such as a tiny alabaster relief in the same collection, inv. no. 15-1873.

hope this is of some use,
Glyn

Koechlin won The Best Actress Award At The Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival for her role in Margarita, with a Straw (2014) which was the only Indian film to be screened at the festival, and was also the runner up at Seattle International Film Festival for Best Actress. Other notable works include thriller film Shaitan (2011), My Friend Pinto (2011), the critically successful political thriller Shanghai (2012) and the romantic comedy Happy Ending (2014).
