The Web Site

Becoming a Registered User

In order to provide personalisation features to users of the Gothic Ivories web site, we need to collect enough information to uniquely identify each user. The only information we require to do this is a valid email address, which is by definition unique. We validate email addresses as part of the registration process.

Once registered, users can:

  • Create and amend their own Sets of images (Sets feature)
  • Send links to pages on this web site to other Internet users (Email-a-link feature)
  • Track the pages they have visited (History feature)
  • Save searches for future use (Searches feature)
  • Contribute to Forums (Forums feature)
  • Opt to receive occasional email newsletters form the Gothic Ivories web site
  • Opt to receive email newsletters from other cultural/heritage organisations based at Somerset House in London

We guarantee not to use your email for any other purpose without your express permission. You can read our full privacy policy by following the link on the contents page of the About... section.

Once you registered successfully, you log in by typing in your email address and password in the Log In page. The top toolbar, which is dimmed when you are not logged in, is now activated, and you can use the features listed above.

Step 1

To start the registration process, click on the link to the left of the top menu bar, called Log In, then click on the button marked Register in the lower section of the screen.

Step 2

You now need to fill in your email address, and provide a first and last name by which you would like to be identified when you vist the site (it doesn't have to be your own). Then choose a memorable password: in order to make sure that you haven't mistyped your chosen password, we ask you to give it twice.

Step 3

Once you've given this information, click on the button marked Submit.

You may also at this point choose to receive emails from the Gothic Ivories Project whenever the site is updated, and also emails about the Courtauld Institute of Art and other galleries and events at Somerset House. Both are highly recommended means of keeping in touch, and we won't pass on your email address or send you lots of unwanted messages - we usually send out an email newsletter about three times a year.

Step 4

To make sure that it really was you who entered your email address (and not someone pretending to be you), we ask you to respond to a confirmation email that should have arrived in your InBox by the time you've finished reading this text. Please click on the highlighted text in this email to acknowledge that you wish to register with the Gothic Ivories web site.

If your email application doesn't show this text as an active, clickable link, then please select the whole URL (it begins http://www.artandarchitecture.org.uk/") it, copy it, and paste it into the address box on your web browser and hit return. (Do check that the full URL has been pasted in: if it fills more than one line in the email it can get truncated.) Either way a confirmation page on the Gothic Ivories site will notify you that your registration has been successful.

One word of advice: please reply to the confirmation email before logging into the Gothic Ivories site for the first time.

If you experience any problems associated with registration on the Gothic Ivories web site, please contact us at: admin@gothicivories.ac.uk.
