Collaborating Institutions

How to Collaborate

This project largely relies on the good will of repository institutions, private collectors, art dealers, etc. in providing access to their files and images so that the resource can be accurate, well illustrated, and as complete as possible.

Here is what we mean by collaborating.

Contribution of the repository institutions

Text

Important: The mission of the Gothic Ivories Project is to compile published information and scholarly opinion on known objects, not to emit a judgement on them.

  • Institutions send information about the relevant objects to the Project team who then compile entries on the Project database.
  • Once entries have been compiled, they are sent back to each institution for checking and editing in the form of one electronic file which can then be returned with amendments and/or additions.
  • In order to ensure that repository institutions keep control over the information made available on the Gothic Ivories Project website, no information regarding their objects is made available online without their prior agreement.

Images

  • Institutions are asked to contribute at least one image per object. Although in the case of destroyed, stolen or missing pieces, this may not be possible.
  • These images are only made available online once the copyright has been cleared with the institution or relevant body.

Contribution of the Gothic Ivories Project

  • Creating accurate and complete entries.
  • Allowing to view these objects in context.
  • Making collections better known: links directing the user to the websites of the repository institutions are provided, accessible from the object entries and from a page listing the contributing institutions.
  • Providing entries which can then be reused on the website or online catalogue of the institution. Once approved and corrected, entries are sent to the repository institution in XML or Word format.
  • Maintaining and updating regularly the database in the longer term.
