Side 1: Judgement of Solomon; soldiers about to cut the child in two; mother crying; seated king with crown and sceptre.
Side 2: battle scene; soldiers in armour fighting; swords.

Warren 2014: North Italian, early 15th century.

Carved on both sides.

Object Condition
Loss of tip of one of the small teeth.

Provenance
Possibly collection of George Dance the Younger (b. 1741, d. 1825). Collection of Sir Samuel Rush Meyrick (b. 1783, d. 1848), by descent to Lieutenant-General Augustus W. H. Meyrick (b. 1826, d. 1902); sold by General Meyrick between 1871 and 1878. Collection of John Dunn-Gardner (d. 1903): his sale, Christie's, london, 30 April 1902, lot 153; sold £195 to Wellby; collection of Montagu Samuel, 1st Baron Swaythling (b. 1832, d. 1911), Townhill Park, Southampton: Swaythling sale, Christie’s, London, 11 July 1946, lot 146; collection of J. Francis Mallett (bought for £252); his bequest to the Museum in 1947.
