Copper;ivory

Height: 175 mm (ivory only)

Seated Virgin; angels. Pietà (Lamentation of the Virgin over Christ's body); crown of thorns; mount Golgotha; crosses. Standing Virgin and Child; cherub giving a flower to Christ (?). Crucifixion with two bearded apostles (?).
Medallions containing quatrefoils enclosing protruding cones in the spandrels.

Kryzhanovskaya 2014: 19th century.

Reverse
Carved in the round.

Object Condition
Background damaged in places. Discolouration caused by contact with the metal.
Large vertical break down the Virgin and Child scene.

Comments
Traces of silver on the copper, indicating it must have been silver-plated.

Provenance
Collection of Stepan Nikolaevich Mitusov (b. 1847, d. 1922?), Saint Petersburg: his sale, 1897, lot 121 (Katalog kollektsii predmetov iz slonovoi kosti S. N. Mitusova (Saint Petersburg, 1897), no. 121). Collection of the Museum of the Society for the Encouragement of the Fine Arts (Muzei OPKh); transferred to the Hermitage in 1929.
