Ivory;metal (remains of hinges)

Height: 107mm
Width: 71mm

Crucifixion; swooning Virgin supported by Holy Women; saint John the Evangelist and onlookers; sun and moon.
Pointed trefoils in the spandrels.

Williamson 1999: France (Paris), c. 1320.
Williamson and Davies 2014: France (probably Paris), c. 1340-1350.


Attribution
Unknown

Hinges
Traces of two missing hinges on the left side (possibly straw hinge).

Reverse
Flat and smooth. Incised inscription: 'Robt. Fontaine 1416'.

Object Condition
Large hole beside Christ's body and smaller hole to the right of the cross.
Traces of two clasps on the outer edge, which were secured by three pins.

Provenance
Collection of Mrs Catherine Ward, West Bridgford, Nottingham: given by her to the museum in 1999.
