Erbach 1993: Italy (?), 1st half of the 14th century.
Kryzhanovskaya 2014: Germany (?), mid 14th century.

Polychromy - Gilding
Traces of gilding and polychromy.

Reverse
Curved, pulp cavity visible. Back of the right-hand-side king flat and smooth.

Object Condition
The head of the central figure broke and has been glued back into place; the base has been restored and there are traces of a mount; the crowns are chipped.
Several holes, some plugged with ivory or wood.

Provenance
Possibly in the Goldschmidt collection, Frankfurt-am-Main, c. 1875. Collection of Stepan Nikolaevich Mitusov (b. 1847; d. 1922 (?), Saint Petersburg: his sale, 1897, lot 45 (Katalog kollektsii predmetov iz slonovoi kosti S. N. Mitusova (Saint Petersburg, 1897), no. 45); collection of the Museum of the Society for the Encouragement of the Fine Arts (Muzei OPkh); transferred to the Hermitage in 1919.
