Ivory

Height: 137mm
Width: 84mm

Crucifixion; swooning Virgin supported by Holy Women; saint John the Evangelist and onlookers holding scrolls; angel holding the sun and the moon; rugged cross.
Medallions enclosing quatrefoils with protruding cones in the spandrels.

Gesta 1980: France, mid 14th century.
Randall 1993: Mosan (Liège?), 3rd quarter of the 14th century.

Hinges
Traces of two missing hinges on the left side.

Reverse
Flat. Engraved within a double incised border with a scene of the Nativity by a folk artist (probably 18th century, according to Randall 1993). Exhibition label: 'Art Treasures Exhibition. Museum. Stonyhurst College'.

Object Condition
Three corners chipped. Cracked at top centre. The central hole drilled in the upper border appears to be original, according to Randall (1993).

Provenance
Collection of Stonyhurst College, Lancashire, England (accessioned in 1800). Collection of Edward R. Lubin, New York. Collection of Mr. and Mrs John R. Blum (in 1972). Martin D'Arcy Gallery of Art, Loyola University, Chicago. Bought in 1979 from Edward R. Lubin, Inc. thanks to the Ernest I. White Class of 1893 Endowment Fund and the University Purchase Fund.
