Standing Virgin and Child; Virgin holding a flower in her right hand; Christ seated on left arm; Christ in long robe; Christ holding a fruit in his left hand.
Pinnacles. Pointed trefoil in the gable.

Hinges
Traces of missing hinges on either side.

Object Condition
In 1924
Missing: right hand of the Virgin (replaced); parts of the crown (restored); finger on the right hand of Christ; columns, canopy (restored). Many architectural elements probably modern.
Today
Almost completely destroyed during WWII. Ten fragments have survived (see Provenance).

Comments
This piece would originally have been the centre of a polyptych whose wings closed over it to enclosed the Virgin statuette.

Provenance
Collection of Frédéric Spitzer, Paris: his sale, Paris, 1893, lot 124; either acquired at the Spitzer sale by Oscar Hainauer (b. 1840s?, d. 1894) who then gifted it to the Museum, or bought by the Museum with funding given by him; undocumented after 7 April 1945; ten fragments returned by the Soviet Union to the Museum in 1958.
