Polychromy - Gilding
Traces of gilding (hair; dress; crown) and polychromy (red and blue under the right arm; mantle decorated with dots; dress with stars).

Reverse
Carved in the round.
On the bottom of the statuette: unreadable 18th-century label.
On the pedestal, inscription: 'Vente LEVY 1928'.

Object Condition
Missing: part of the Virgin's right hand, including the object or stem of flowers she used to hold. The crown is modern, realised in gold, in a 14th-century style. It was commissioned by Thoby to replace another modern crown which the statue had when it was in Lévy collection.

Provenance
Collection of Emile Lévy: his sale, Paris, 14 December 1928, lot 19; collection of Henry Leman, art dealer; collection of Dr. Paul Thoby (bought in 1936 from Henry Leman; no. XVIII in Thoby's collection): his bequest to the museum in 1969.
