Ivory (from a sperm whale?)

Height: 80mm
Width: 47mm
Depth: 23mm

Trinity; God the Father holding Christ on the cross; dove of the Holy Spirit issuing from the mouth of God the Father; Gnadenstuhl (Throne of Mercy).

Museum's opinion 2011: England, last quarter of the 14th century.

Reverse
Carved in the round. Carved inscription: "VIVXFP".

Object Condition
Missing: God's left hand.
Chipped around the base at the front. White residue.
Two unreadable labels attached to the bottom.

Provenance
Collection of Dr. Paul Thoby, Nantes (bought from art dealer Lambert, Paris, on 24 February 1930; no. X in Thoby's collection): his bequest to the museum, 1969. According to Thoby, this piece corresponds to one in the Planquart sale, Lille, 19 October 1888.
