Polychromy - Gilding
Traces of polychromy (green, bright blue, perhaps gilding. See report by A. Cascio and J. Levy, 2002).The wounds on the hands were probably painted.
Reverse
Inscribed: '42, 39'.
Flat and smooth, with some scratches.
Object Condition
Some cracks. Small chip with piece missing at top, centre.
Nine holes for a frame, traces of metal.
Comments
The left wing would almost certainly have depicted a bust of the Virgin and Child (see Gaborit-Chopin 2003; Belting 1981).
Provenance
Acquired in Paris for the Rheinisches Landesmuseum, Bonn (inv. 42,39), August 1942; returned to France in 1948; given to the Louvre by the Office des biens privés, 1951.
