Back of the ivory hidden by the metal frame.
Object Condition
Four nails attach the panel to the back of the triptych.
Comments
The ivory panel has been reused as the centrepiece of a triptych in the 17th century. This triptych was also a reliquary, as is evident from the six cavities in the centre panel which still seem to contain soil from the Holy Land (see inscriptions on the small labels); the top cavity, containing a small cross is given particular prominence thanks to the metal ornament surrounding it. The centre part has a wooden core and the back is covered in a sheet of metal.
Provenance
Collection of J. M. Neutelings-Heuts, Brasschaat; on permanent loan from Willem Neutelings (no. 87).
