Gothic Ivories Project | Head of crozier (crosse) (Side 1)

Side 1: Crucifixion with the Virgin and saint John the Evangelist.
Side 2: Standing Virgin and Child (Vierge glorieuse); two angels holding candlesticks; Christ holding a fruit in his left hand; Virgin holding a flower in her right hand.
Foliated decoration.

Koechlin 1924: France, beginning of the 2nd third of the 14th century.
Gaborit-Chopin 2003 and Museum's opinion 2010: Paris, 1st third of the 14th century.

Polychromy - Gilding
Traces of polychromy (several layers: only the red cross behind the head of the Child is original; see unpublished report by A. Cascio and J. Levy, 1988).

Reverse
Carved in the round.

Object Condition
Scratches for glue where the object would be attached to the pole.
Missing: candlesticks held by the angels.

Provenance
Mistakenly said to have belonged to saint Robert (d. 1110) and to have come from the abbey of Citeaux. Pierre Révoil collection, Lyon. Acquired by the Musée du Louvre in 1828.
