Ivory

Height: 78 mm
Width: 69 mm

Presentation in the Temple; Christ standing on the altar between the Virgin and Simeon; maid holding a candle and a basket of doves brought as offerings.
Pierced trefoils in the spandrels.

Williamson and Davies 2014: probably Eastern French or Rhenish, 1350-1375.

Hinges
Trace of one missing hinge on the left side.

Reverse
Flat and smooth.

Object Condition
Lower edge chipped.
Two holes are pierced in the ivory: below the middle arch and on the Virgin's drapery. Discolouration.

Provenance
Collection of Canon Lewis Gilbertson of Bedford Square (d. 1940), Rector of St Martin's Church, Ludgate Hill, London, by 1928: bequeathed by Mrs. Edith Gilbertson (d. 1940) in memory of her husband in 1940.
