Polychromy - Gilding
Traces of polychromy: red around the frame of the figures with scrolls at both ends of the casket.

Comments
Bottom decorated in intarsia: geometric patterns in green (stained ivory or bone), cream (ivory or bone), and brown (wood) (addition probably made by Gambier Parry in the 19th century). The scene with the chalice and crucified Christ may signify that the casket was used to carry the Host. The casket is locked and the key is now lost: dark red fabric visible in the crack between the lid and side panels of the box indicating the inside is probably lined.

Provenance
Thomas Gambier Parry, Highnam Court (Gloucestershire)(d. 1888): bought before 1875 from an umbrella maker in Brighton (information recorded in pencil in the 1875 manuscript catalogue); Sir Hubert Parry (d. 1918), his eldest son (from 1888); Ernest Gambier-Parry (d. 1936), half-brother of Hubert (from 1918); Mark Gambier-Parry (d. 1966), youngest son of Ernest (from 1936); bequeathed to the Courtauld Institute Galleries in 1966.
