Wing, left
Register 1: Crucifixion; swooning Virgin supported by Holy Women; saint John the Evangelist and onlookers holding scrolls; sun and moon.
Register 2: Nativity and Annunciation to the Shepherds; musician shepherd playing the bagpipes; Virgin holding the left hand of Christ.
Wing, right
Register 1: Coronation of the Virgin; blessing gesture; two angels holding navettes and swinging censers.
Register 2: Adoration of the Magi.

Amsterdam 1994: France, c. 1375-1400.
Van Os 1996: France, 3rd quarter of the 14th century.
Museum's opinion 2012: French (Paris?), 14th century.

Hinges
Two hinges.

Polychromy - Gilding
Traces of polychromy: red, blue (see Coronation scene).

Reverse
Flat and smooth. Longer edges chamfered.

Object Condition
Missing: left hand and crown held by Christ in the Coronation scene; left hand of the left hand-side Magus in the Adoration scene (later repair).
The upper left corner and part of the right hand border of the left wing are later replacements.
Pierced with two holes in bottom of each panel, and two holes in the left edge of the left wing.
The right wing is broken in several pieces which have been glued back together.

Provenance
Said to have come from an Austrian monastery (Schottenkloster, i.e. a Hiberno-Scottish monastery). Demotte collection, early 20th century. Bought in 1964 from the Blumka Gallery, New York, for the collection of Peter and Irene Ludwig, Aachen; donated to the Museum in 1977.
