Koechlin 1924: France, beginning of the 2nd third of the 14th century.

Polychromy - Gilding
Traces of gilding: decorative patterns along the neck and hems.

Reverse
Carved in the round. The ivory is a rich brown colour at the back.

Object Condition
Missing: lower part of the statuette; crown; Christ Child (only his right hand and arm are visible).
The face of the Virgin is damaged. Cut at the waist. The lower edge is ragged and chipped.

Comments
The Virgin would originally have had a metal crown.

Provenance
Collection of Mrs Louis Stern, Paris (at least 1911-1924). Bought by Henry Walters from Henry Daguerre in Paris in 1923; Walters Art Museum, 1931, by bequest.
