Ivory

Height: 190 mm
Width: 90 mm (86mm minimum width)
Depth: 11 mm

Register 1: Crucifixion; swooning Virgin supported by saint John the Evangelist; onlookers holding scrolls; angels.
Register 2: Deposition with the Virgin and saint John the Evangelist; Joseph of Arimathea holding Christ's body; man with pincers removing the nail from Christ's feet; man on a ladder, holding a hammer; saint John the Evangelist crying.

Hinges
Traces of three missing hinges on the right side.

Polychromy - Gilding
Faint traces of polychromy (behind the rosette decoration).

Reverse
Curved. Blue and white label containing the inscription: ‘On loan from Ashmolean Museum Oxford 18’. White label partially torn up containing the inscription: ‘Ashmolean’.

Object Condition
Upper left corner chipped.
Missing: part of the background in the upper register.
Hole in the upper register, beside Christ's feet.

The right wing is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (Inv. 17.190.280). See related objects.
Label with no. ‘72’ in the lower border.

Provenance
Probably collection of William Fletcher (b. 1739, d. 1826); bequeathed to Thomas Robinson (b. 1780, d. 1848); given by him in 1841; Department of Western Art (WA1908.191); transferred to the Department of Antiquities in May 2008.
