Medallions enclosing rosettes.
Body, front
Soldier holding a whip; Death of Judas (Judas hanging). Resurrection; two angels standing on the tomb with hands in prayer; cross. Crucifixion; swooning Virgin supported by one of the Holy Women; saint John the Evangelist. Ascension; Virgin and apostles including saint John the Evangelist holding a martyr's palm and saint Peter holding a key. 
End, right
Betrayal (Taking of Christ; Kiss of Judas); Christ restores Malchus' ear, cut by saint Peter. Nativity and Annunciation to the Shepherds.
Body, back
Annunciation; vase of lilies; dove of the Holy Spirit. Pentecost; Virgin surrounded by the apostles including saint Peter. Attendant with horses; whip. Adoration of the Magi.
End, left
Unidentified scene with seated apostles. Unidentified scene with standing apostles holding books.
Brickwork or tiled roof. Foliated borders. Border of dentils. Pierced quatrefoils in the gables.

Kryzhanovskaya 2014: English (?), mid 19th century.

Reverse
Carved on all sides.

Object Condition
Missing: handle.
Wood damaged by woodworms. Parts cracked or broken off and glued back together at a later stage.
Hinges partly broken.

Provenance
Collection of Stepan Nikolaevich Mitusov (b. 1847; d. 1922?), Saint Petersburg; from 1902, collection of the Museum of the Society for the Encouragement of the Fine Arts (Muzei OPKh); transferred to the Hermitage in 1933.
