Hinges
Two hinges linking the panels to the ivory strips used as spine.
Reverse
Pastedown glued onto the back of each panel.
Object Condition
Later drilled holes (plugged with ivory) in the corners of each panel. Broken around the hinges. Cracked.
Missing: lower left corner of the Crucifixion panel; lower right corner of the Adoration panel.
Comments
These panels now form the binding of a 1495 copy of the Rule of Saint Benedict (date on f. 85r). This manuscript may have come from the Damenstift of saint Stephen in Augsburg (see R. Schmidt, Reichenau und St. Gallen: ihre literarische Überlieferung zur Zeit des Klosterhumanismus in St. Ulrich und Afra zu Augsburg um 1500 (Sigmaringen, 1985), p. 106). The original left wing is now the back cover and the right wing the front cover of this book. Two additional strips of ivory have been added to form the spine.
