Ivory

Height: 75mm
Width: 85mm

Lion (possibly symbol of saint Mark).

Longhurst 1929: North Italian, 13th to 14th century.


Attribution
Unknown

Reverse
Carved in the round.

Object Condition
Ivory stained brown.
Two holes on the back seem to indicate that wings were attached to it and that the lion may have been intended to represent the symbol of saint Mark.
Missing: feet.

Provenance
Said to have been found in excavations in Mexico. Acquired in London in 1927.
