Ivory

Height: 92 mm
Width: 56 mm

Crucifixion; swooning Virgin supported by Holy Women; saint John the Evangelist and onlookers.
Brickwork or tiled roof in the spandrels.

Williamson and Davies 2014: Probably German (Lower Rhine), 1350-1400.

Hinges
Traces of two missing hinges on the left side.

Reverse
Flat and smooth.
Label with inscription 'DR. HERMANN BURG KÖLN NR. B P 85.'
Label with inscription 'HYAM & CO. 185 Brompton Rd. London, S.W.3. 6746 sf/t/-.'

Object Condition
The ivory has split vertically immediately to the right of Christ's body, and been glued back together. Holes on either side of the break reflect an earlier repair.
Central hole in the upper part of the panel, probably for hanging (later). Chipped.

Provenance
Dr Hermann Burg, art dealer, Cologne (see label on the reverse). Hyam and Co., Brompton Road, London (see label on the reverse). Collection of Canon Lewis Gilbertson of Bedford Square, Rector of St Martin's Church, Ludgate Hill, London, by 1928; bequeathed by Mrs. Edith Gilbertson (d.1940) in memory of her husband in 1940.
