Lid
Courting couples (meeting of lovers); youth chucking his lover under the chin. Lady crowning her kneeling lover with a chaplet. Offering of a ring. Courting couple; lady holding a dog. Pointed trefoils in the spandrels.
Body, front
Lady making a wreath by a flowery bush. Courting couple (meeting of lovers); couple kneeling under a tree. Hooded man with a hawk on his wrist.
End, right
Female musician playing a portable organ supported by a lion; trees.
Body, back
Hawking party; courting couple (meeting of lovers); lady and youth hawking on horseback; lady chucking her lover under the chin; youth with a hawk on his wrist; hunter blowing a horn; seated hunter with a hawk on his wrist.
End, left
Couple playing chess; courting couple; lady holding chess pieces in her left hand; two attendants holding curtains or the sides of the tent.

Koechlin 1924: French, 1st half of the 14th century.
Williamson 2002 and Museum's opinion 2009: France (probably Paris), c. 1320-1330.

Unknown

Reverse
Carved on all sides. Bottom smooth and flat.
Label with inscription at the back of the lid: 'Collection Wernher no. 111'. The interior of the casket is not lined.

Provenance
Collection of Karl Thewalt, Cologne (at least 1900-1903): his sale, Kunsthaus Lempertz, Cologne, 4-14 November 1903, lot 590; collection of Sir Julius Wernher (d. 1912), Bath House, London; on loan to English Heritage and displayed at Ranger's House since 2002.
