Ivory

Height: 197mm
Width: 75mm
Depth: 20mm

Standing king dressed as a monk (saint Louis?); blessing gesture; brooch in the shape of a shield with the coat of arms of Castile; crown; knotted belt.

Schenkluhn 1987 and Museum's opinion 2012: 19th century, in the manner of Italian works of the 14th century.

Polychromy - Gilding
Traces of polychromy.

Reverse
Curved. Concave. Back dyed reddish-brown, with black illegible inscription.
Inscriptions: 'm:IHS', 'N', 'D'.

Object Condition
Shrinkage cracks on front and back. The crown is a separate piece, attached from below.The two blessing fingers were completed in 1914.Two drill holes in the base, under the two feet.
Missing: the top and bottom of the staff held in the left hand.

Provenance
Acquired from Dr L. Pollack, Rome, in 1913.
