Cow horn, silver (mounts).

Height: 315mm

Upper register: medallions with hybrids and animals.
Middle register: standing crowned king flanked by lions.
Scrolls; foliage.

Museum's opinion 2011: Danish, 19th century.

Polychromy - Gilding
The horn is dark brown in colouring, possibly due to staining.

Reverse
Carved in the round.

Object Condition
Carving worn.

Comments
An additional note in the British Museum Acquisitions Register, dated 31/10/1973, reads, 'Dr. Margeröy, Haslum, Norway, considers this horn to be probably Icelandic in origin and datable to the 15th century.' This horn was displayed at an exhibition on horn at the Worthing Museum and Art Gallery, 1973 (see bibliography). The middle register bears an inscription, 'Stwet ther bokft'.

Collection of Ralph Bernal (b. 1783, d. 1854), 93 Eaton Square, London; sale, Christie's and Manson, London, 5 March 1855, lot 1672; purchased by the British Museum from John Webb, through Christie's, 1855.
