Ivory

Height: 136 mm
Width: 63 mm
Depth: 11 mm

Register 1: Crucifixion; swooning Virgin supported by Holy Women; saint John the Evangelist and onlookers holding scrolls; sun and moon (missing).
Register 2: Nativity and Annunciation to the Shepherds; musician shepherd holding a shawm; swaddled Christ.
Incised trefoils in the spandrels.

Museum's opinion 2015: France, 14th century.

Hinges
Traces of two missing hinges on the right side.

Polychromy - Gilding
Extensive traces of gilding and polychromy: gold (clothes, along the hems, crowns, hair, architectural details, scroll, ass and ox, etc.), red (spandrels of the lower register), blue (spandrels of the upper register; background; shoes?).

Reverse
Flat and smooth.

Object Condition
Parts seem to have been cut out, including the head of Christ, of the Virgin and of one of the Holy Women. The head of saint John is damaged. Sun chipped.
Broken around the hinges.
Left border chipped.

Comments
The right wing of this diptych is also in the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh (Inv. H.KK 33). See related objects.
