Polychromy - Gilding
Traces of polychromy: red (flower), green (flower), yellow and light brown (hair), red (Child's robe). There are traces of white and yellow on the draperies, but they may be the traces of an abrasive used for polishing, or of some substance used for cleaning. Very small traces of gilding.

Reverse
Flat with some scoring. Ink inscription: 'R- 32002, 1946'.

Object Condition
Vertical cracks. Chipped around the base at the front.
Missing: the Virgin's left foot, and part of her mantle; part of the back of the base; the angel's left hand; the third flower of the crown.
There are traces of scoring and of velvet fibers and dark brown glue on the base. Two holes in the base. As the ivory is naturally curved, the space between the Virgin's back and the frame has been filled with a small piece of cardboard.

Provenance
Collection of Robert Seligman and Béatrice Seligman (née Fabry): promised to the museum on 22 November 1982; given by their son Thomas Seligman to the museum, 2 December 2009.
