Scene from the life of saint Agnes
Saint Agnes before the prefect Semprenius (?); saint Agnes with a lamb; king holding a pair of gloves; soldier holding a spear; crown.

Leeuwenberg 1969: France (?), last quarter of the 18th century to 1st half of the 19th century.
Museum's opinion 2015: Northern Italian, 19th century in 14th century style.

Master of the Agrafe Forgeries (Leeuwenberg 1969)

Reverse
Hidden by a wooden backing.

Object Condition
The relief has been glued onto a thin ivory sheet, itself pasted onto a wooden panel.

Provenance
Salomon collection, Berlin, before 1917; sold, Rudolph Lepke’s Kunst–Auctions–Haus, Berlin, 15 May 1917, lot 103 (Skulpturen–Sammlung aus Berliner privatbesitz, lot 103, as 'Johannes der Täufer vor Herodes'). Collection of Harry Fuld (d. 1932), Frankfurt, before 1932; by descent to his widow, Lucie Mayer-Fuld (née Cajzago) and by extension to her second husband, Acatiu Mayer-Fuld, Berlin, Biarritz, and New York, 1932; sold, through Raphael Stora, to the Art Institute in 1942.
