Ivory

Courting couples (meeting of lovers); youth chucking his lover under the chin; couple conversing; lady holding a flower; lady holding a dog; bird in a tree; fashionable dress; buttoned sleeves.
Pointed trefoils in the spandrels; two compartments separated by a tree.

Koechlin 1924: French, 2nd third of the 14th century.
Calkins 1968: French, 14th century.

Reverse
Back turned with a depression for (missing) mirror.

Object Condition
Two central holes in the upper part of the piece (probably for later hanging). Vertical crack issuing from one of the holes.
Probably missing corner terminals (were replaced with modern foliated ones in the early 20th century).

Provenance
Germeau collection (no. 918). Collection of Octave Homberg (b. 1876, d. 1941), Paris: his sale, Paris, 11-16 May 1908, lot 478 (purchased by Riard?). Bought in 1925 by Henry Walters from Léon Gruel in Paris. Walters Art Museum, Baltimore (Inv. 71.198), until 1973, when it was de-accessioned; sold, Sotheby's, London, May (?) 1963. Willem Neutelings-Heuts collection, Brasschaat (bought in January 1983); on loan from the Neutelings Foundation to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam (Inv. BK-C-1995-2) from 1995 to 2010; on loan from the Neutelings Foundation to the Bonnefantenmuseum since 2010.
