Seated saint James the Greater with pilgrim's hat and staff; hat decorated with scallop shell; open book; belt; city; columns.
Crosshatched background.

Polychromy - Gilding
Extensive traces of gilding and polychromy: gold (clothing, halo, throne, frame, landscape, architectural details, decorative pattern on the cloak), blue (background, lining of the cloak); red (lips).

Reverse
Curved. An ivory handle is set into a chamfered slot in the back.

Object Condition
Missing: finial and foliated decoration along the upper edge of the pax.
Central hole in the upper part of the piece.
Label with inscription: '1267' (on the left hand side column).
Vertical superficial crack at the top to the right when facing the back.

Provenance
From the Benedictine abbey of San Martino delle Scale (Palermo); on display in the Museum of the abbey (inv. 1267); collection of the Regio Museo Nazionale of Palermo from 1876; transferred in the Museum in 1954.
