Ivory

Height: 120mm
Width: 90mm

Crucifixion with the Virgin and saint John the Evangelist; saint Mary Magdalene embracing the foot of the cross; titulus.
Crosshatched background; roped border; columns.

Richter 2003: Netherlands or Rhineland, 2nd half of 15th century.
Jülich 2007: Netherlands or Rhineland, 2nd half of 15th century.

Polychromy - Gilding
Traces of polychromy: green (ground); traces of a darker colour in the cross-hatched background.

Reverse
Curved and smooth. Ivory handle with carved decoration.

Object Condition
Worn by handling; abrasions on the surface; damaged on the arch decoration.
Missing: foliated decoration at the top of the gable.Repaired with an iron rivet on the bottom edge (Jülich 2007).
The profile of the ogee arch has been reworked (Richter 2003).

Provenance
Collection of Friedrich Marx: Marx bequest to the Museum in 1919.
