Polychromy - Gilding
Traces of gilding and polychromy: gold (trees), blue (garments), green (ground).

Reverse
Carved on all sides.
Two museum labels on underside. Two texts glued to the inside of the lid: description from the 1902 sale catalogue and, probably also from this same catalogue 'V[EU]VE CAMILLE LELONG'.

Object Condition
Missing: brass rings except for one on the back; one square of the chequered pattern on the lid.

Comments
Unusually, the chequered pattern features on the lid rather than on the bottom. The latter is not decorated and the wooden core is visible.

Provenance
Collection of Camille Lelong, art dealer, Paris, sold by his widow in 1902: sale, Paris, Galerie Georges Petit, 8-10 December 1902, lot 183. Collection of Dr W. L. Hildburgh, London, by 1924 when it was loaned to the Museum; given to the Museum in 1949.
