Polychromy - Gilding
Original gilding and polychromy (few losses): gold (along the hems; crowns; hair), azurite blue (lining of clothes, lining of Anna's veil); cinnabar red (book; pyxes; painted inscription on the archangels' scroll: 'AVE'; lining of the Virgin's veil and of Simeon's cloak; mouths, cheeks, etc.), red lake (angel's diadem, gemstone crowns), green lake (ground; book; Joseph's stick; lining of Christ's garment); brown (eyebrows; hair and beards of the kings), light blue made of white mixed with azurite (hair; bead of Joseph and Simeon), black (pupils), painted pattern in gold, red lake and green lake on the altar cloth.

Reverse
Pulp cavity sometimes visible.

Comments
These reliefs were originally applied onto the wings of a wooden altarpiece which would have been enhanced with gilding and polychromy.

Provenance
Lichtenthal Convent, Baden-Baden. Collection of Georg Gimbel, Baden-Baden, acquired from him by the museum in 1892.
