Comments
This panel is now on the front cover of a French 16th-century (1501) book of hours for the use of Rouen. The binding consists of purple velvet on wooden boards, and a metal plate set with four turquoises at the angles and four red clear stones.

Provenance
Possibly one of two manuscripts in ornamental bindings which Bernard Quaritch sold to Alexander Lindsay (b. 1812, d. 1880), later 25th Earl of Crawford, in April 1866 (Quaritch reported that a Cologne dealer had left them with him and they were said to have come from Altenberg Abbey near Cologne). Collection of James Ludovic Lindsay (b. 1847, d. 1913), 26th Earl of Crawford; purchased in 1901 together with other manuscripts from the Bibliotheca Lindesiana by Enriqueta Rylands (b. 1843, d. 1908) for the John Rylands Library.
