Polychromy - Gilding
Traces of polychromy on the Virgin's belt (ochre).

Reverse
Carved in the round. Fringe along the hem of the Virgin's veil at the back.

Object Condition
Missing: Christ's hands and head, Virgin's right forearm, upper part of the Virgin's head, presumably including a crown, lower part of the piece including the Virgin's feet. Crosshatching where her left foot would have been. Nose chipped.
Deep cracks. Two holes drilled in the bottom of the piece (it was probably a composite piece); crosshatching.

Provenance
Traditionally considered as a present by Blanche de Castille (d. 1252) to the Dominican Monastery of Poissy. As the monastery was only founded in 1297, the piece could have rather been a donation from Louis IX or Blanche de Castille to the Church of Saint Mary of Poissy (hypothesis of C. de Lalande, curator at the Musée Thomas Dobrée).Collection of Armand-Charles Signol; Collection of Auguste de Bastard d'Estang (b. 1792, d. 1883); Collection of the Marquis de la Ferronnays, by inheritance (listed in the collection of Auguste Ferron [b. 1777, d. 1842]); Collection of M. de Cossé-Brissac, by inheritance: his bequest to the museum in 1958.
