Ivory

Height: 105mm
Width: 60mm

Nativity with midwife; Christ standing in the Virgin's lap; Annunciation to the Shepherds; angel holding a scroll.
Pointed trefoils in the spandrels.


Koechlin Number: 0464

Koechlin 1924: France, 2nd half of 14th century.
Jülich 2007: Rhineland, 1st half of 15th century.

Hinges
Traces of two missing hinges on right side (not original).

Reverse
Recessed to receive the wax, with a raised border. Blue and white label with inscription: '763'. Label with inscription '93' and '7' added in pencil.

Object Condition
Worn by handling.
Pair of three holes on the left side to attach hinges when the panel was transformed into a diptych).

Comments
According to Jülich, this panel 1as probably originally not part of a diptych but attached to a casket (Jülich 2007).

Provenance
Probably from the collection of Baron von Hüpsch (b. 1730, d. 1805), Cologne; acquired in 1805 by the Museum.
