Inv. 1OM3698
Crucifixion with the Virgin and saint John the Evangelist. Kneeling angel supporting the volute. Unidentified standing figures.
Foliated decoration: ivy leaf or vine leaf. Lizard (salamander?).
Museum's opinion 2013: Northern Italy, early 15th century (?) for some bone carvings at the base of the volute in an Embriachi style; rest: 19th century.

Reverse
Carved in round, except the back of the figure of Christ, which seems to have been left uncarved. Saint John the Evangelist and the Virgin are given wings.
Object Condition
The volute is made of ivory plaques fixed onto a wooden core. Some of these plaques have gone missing, especially at the back and on the underside.
Comments
The fact that the Virgin and saint John the Evangelist have wings confirms the non medieval nature of this piece, apart from possibly two vertical panels with standing figures between the base of the volute and the knop which seem to belong to the Embriachi group and thus could date to the early 15th century (Northern Italy).
Provenance
Crozier of Mgr Duperray, bishop of Montpellier (1949-1957), formerly in the Bishop's palace (Evêché) in Montpellier; deposited at the Musée Fabre in Montpellier since 2009.
