Ivory

Crucifixion with the Virgin and saint John the Evangelist.
Pointed trefoils in the spandrels.

Museum's opinion 2011: France, 2nd half of the 14th century.

Polychromy - Gilding
Extensive traces of polychromy and gilding: blue and gold (spandrels), black (cross), gold (along the hem of John's cloak).

Reverse
Flat. Pasted onto a piece of cardboard. Labels recording provenance.

Object Condition
Vertical crack. Missing part of background. Glued onto a backing because it had broken into at least 5 pieces. One piece of ivory is modern, to the left of Christ's feet.

Provenance
Collection of Charles Fairfax-Murray (b. 1849, d. 1919): his bequest to the Museum in 1917.
