Couple conversing; male and female faces in the background, above a wall (Warning against idle gossip?).
Pointed trefoils.

Museum's opinion 2009: French (Paris), c. 1320-1330.

Hinges
Traces of two later missing hinges on the right side.

Polychromy - Gilding
Traces of polychromy: green and red (architecture and lining of the lady's cloak).

Reverse
Scratched; traces of glue along the edges.
Ink inscription with the number '157-270'; blue and white label with the inscription :'Collection Wernher no. 87'.

Object Condition
The upper part seems to have been recut.
Two sets of two vertically aligned holes corresponding to two later (missing) hinges.

Comments
Originally, this plaque was probably not a diptych wing, as the hinges seem to have been an afterthought.

Provenance
Collection of Sir Julius Wernher (d. 1912), Bath House, London; on loan to English Heritage and displayed at Ranger's House since 2002.
