Height: 126 mm
Width: 74 mm

Register 1: Nativity (Virgo lactans); hanging lamp; swaddled Christ.
Register 2: Presentation in the Temple; Christ standing on the altar between the Virgin and Simeon; maid holding a candlestick and a basket of doves brought as offerings.

Koechlin 1924: France, 2nd half of the 14th century (left wing).
Warren 2014: perhaps Northern France, c. 1320.

Traces of two missing hinges on the left side.

Polychromy - Gilding
Traces of polychromy under the arches.

Reverse
Flat and smooth.
Pasted sale catalogue cutting with inscription: '15 DITTO: the Nativity and Presentation in the Temple - 14th. Century' and, handwritten on this piece of paper: 'Rhode Hawkins Coll.'.

Object Condition
Hole in the upper left corner.

Comments
The right wing of this diptych is now in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford (AN2008.20).

Provenance
Collection of Major Rhode Hawkins (b. 1821, d. 1884): possibly lot 15 in his sale? (see label on the reverse); acquired by the Museum in 1919 from Rev. E. C. Dewick of St Aidan's College, Birkenhead.
