Ivory;gilt copper (modern throne, crown and base)

Height: 281mm
Width: 96mm

Seated Virgin and Child (Virgo lactans); Christ seated on left arm; Christ in long robe; Christ touching the back of the Virgin's veil.


Koechlin Number: 0652bis

Koechlin 1912 and 1924: France, 2nd half of the 14th century.
Randall 1993: French, 1340-1360.


Attribution
Unknown

Reverse
Carved in the round, but lower relief on the back. The lower part of the piece is hidden by the copper throne, but seems to be flat.

Object Condition
Missing: left foot of the Virgin; chipped around the base; losses to the fingers of the Virgin's left hand.
Numerous vertical cracks.
Three holes in the back, one large, one medium, one small (plugged).

Provenance
Cardon collection, Brussels (by 1900). Emile Baboin collection, Lyon (at least 1912-1924). Bought from Raphael Stora, New York, in 1953.
