Ivory

Height: 131 mm
Width: 166 mm
Depth: 6 mm (5mm minimum depth)

Side 1: Fountain of Youth; old and young; cripples with crutches; couples bathing; soldier with a halberd; lady wearing a horned headdress (bourrelet); trees.
Side 2: Hunter spearing a boar; hunter on foot, holding a halberd; hunter on horseback blowing a horn; trees; running dogs.
Roped border; crosshatched background; foliated scrolls; vine border with grapes.

Warren 2014: probably France, mid-15th century.

Traces of gilding and polychromy

Reverse
Carved on both sides.

Object Condition
Broken in two pieces along a vertical line, and later repaired.
Damage on the right side (when facing the Fountain of Youth scene), repaired with new plugs of bone.

Collection of Albert Denison Denison, 1st Baron Londesborough, (b. 1805, d.1860), by 1857. Collection of Charles Fairfax Murray (b. 1849, d. 1919). Iden, art dealer, 1946; collection of John Francis Mallett; his bequest to the Museum in 1947.
