Crucifixion; swooning Virgin supported by Holy Women; saint John the Evangelist and onlookers holding scrolls.
Border of dentils.
Museum's opinion 2012: Meuse or Rhineland, in the Parisian style, last third of 14th century.

Reverse
Slightly chamfered on both edges. The handle which was originally set into a chamfered slot in the back has been lost. Flat with scoring.
Various labels with inscriptions: '145', '606', '1695' and 'Inv. 4409' (wrong: should be 'Inv. 4406').
Object Condition
Stained and cracked. Bore hole in the upper part.
Missing part of the background on Christ's left side and at the foot of the cross (filling: resin?).
Provenance
Collection of Marc-Antoine Rougier (d. 1873), Lyon: sale, Paris, Galerie Georges Petit, 3-4 May 1904; acquired at this sale by Marie Grobet, for 825 francs; Marie, following the death of her second husband, Louis Grobet, in 1917, gave her collection to the city of Marseille in 1919; the museum opened to the public in 1925.
