Register 1: Baptism of Christ by saint John the Baptist; angel holding Christ's tunic; blessing hand of God; angels praying; tree.
Register 2: Decollation of saint John the Baptist (Martyrdom of saint John the Baptist); Salome holding a large bowl to receive the head; queen Herodias watches the scene.
Incised trefoils.

Museum's opinion 2012: France, 14th century.

Traces of two missing hinges on the right side.

Reverse
Flat and smooth. 1957 sale catalogue entry pasted on the back.

Object Condition
Missing: right hand of saint John.

Provenance
Sotheby's, London, 6 December 1957, lot 42 (see catalogue entry pasted on the reverse). Collection of Édouard Richard (b. 1909, d. 1986) and his wife Marie-Joseph Richard (b. 1915, d. 1997); their gift to the Museum in 1983.
