Width: 63 mm (at base)

Seated Virgin and Child; Christ walking in the Virgin's lap; Christ in long robe; Virgin holding Christ with both hands; bench; cushion.

Frankfurt 1981: early 17th century.

Unknown

Reverse
Flat and smooth with some scoring. Iron pins at the back of both figures' heads.

Object Condition
Chip to the base next to the Virgin's foot and two small chips to the edge of her veil.
Christ's head has broken off and been repaired.
The sculpture has been cleaned, presumably shortly after acquisition.

Walter Sneyd (1809-88), Keele Hall, Staffordshire; Keele Hall Heirlooms Sale, Christie's, London, 7 July 1902, lot 29; collection of John McAndrew, Holly Hill, Coleman's Hatch, Sussex: McAndrew Sale, Christie's, London, 2 December 1925, lot 151; Dr W.L. Hildburgh collection, London, given to the museum by Dr Hildburgh in 1949 (previously on loan, no. 1506).
