Ivory

Height: 100mm
Width: 70mm

Side 1: Death of the Virgin (Dormition); Christ holding the soul of the Virgin; apostles; Virgin in a mandorla borne to Heaven by angels (Assumption).
Side 2: Christ in glory holding the orb and cross; blessing gesture; Christ trampling a monster. Four seated Evangelists in the corners: saint Matthew writing, with his symbol, the angel; saint John writing, with his symbol, the eagle; saint Mark writing, with his symbol, the lion; saint Luke writing, with his symbol, the ox.

Vöge 1900: Italian (Florentine), 14th century.
Volbach 1923: Italy (Siena?), 2nd half of the 14th century.
Koechlin 1924: France, mid 14th century.
Museum's opinion 2010: Paris, c. 1320-1330.

Reverse
The upper part of the panel has been cut in order to make it rounded and it was, at one point, fitted into a metal frame. Lower border damaged.

Object Condition
Missing: upper part of the panel.
Edges chipped.

Comments
This piece seems to have been reused as a pax.

Acquired in Florence in 1883.
