Ivory

Height: 340 mm

Seated Virgin and Child: Christ standing on the Virgin's left knee; Christ in long robe; Virgin trampling a human figure under her left foot; brooch; row of blind arches on the back of the throne.

Kube 1925: France, 14th century.
Kryzhanovskaya 2014: France, end of the 13th - beginning of the 14th century.

Polychromy - Gilding
Traces of gilding and polychromy: gold (trace of pattern along the hems), green (probably originally blue, lining of the Virgin's cloak), green and red, architectural details at the back of the throne, faint trace of painted figures under the arches.

Reverse
Carved in the round. Row of blind arches on the back of the throne; tracery.

Object Condition
Hole on the underside to attach to a base.
Missing: crown (probably made of a different material), head and both arms of Christ, Virgin's right forearm and hand; tip of the Virgin's shoes and figure under her foot (all later replacements) .
The base is made of a different piece of ivory. A piece on the Virgin's forehead broke and was glued back into place. Hem of the Virgin's cloak chipped in places.

Laborie (Paris, 1867), no. 110); collection of Vasiliy L'vovich Naryshkin (b. 1841, d. 1906), Saint Petersburg; donated in 1871 to the Museum of the Society for the Encouragement of the Fine Arts (Muzei OPKh); transferred to the Hermitage in 1919.
